About the event

Beethoven is not only one of the most well-known names in Western Classical music but also one of the most influential composers of all time.

After Beethoven’s death in 1827  heated debates erupted in Europe’s cultural and academic circles on the direction of music after Beethoven. Carl Maria von Weber famously said of Beethoven’s ‘Symphony No. 7’ - ‘Beethoven is now ripe for the madhouse’! This reflects the shocking quality of his music, and 19th century composers lived in his shadow. Indeed it took Brahms twenty years to compose his first symphony, such was the pressure exerted by Beethoven’s legacy.

This recital pays tribute to that legacy, with works by Beethoven, Kreisler, Clara Schumann, and Ysäye. Each composer took the Romantic idiom in  a new direction, from the intense lyricism of Clara Schumann to the virtuoso writing of Kreisler and Ysäye.
