The Jesuits’ Church Foundation is pleased to announce the successful inauguration of the exhibition “Images of Reform: Italian Baroque Altar Paintings from the Jesuits’ Church”, held on 28 January 2026 at the Oratory of the Onorati, Jesuit Church, Valletta.

This exhibition is the result of a strong collaborative initiative between the Jesuits’ Church Foundation and the University of Malta – Valletta Campus, reflecting a shared commitment to cultural heritage, scholarly research, and public engagement.

A Collaboration Rooted in Research and Heritage

Curated by Rev. Dr Nicholas Doublet and Prof. Keith Sciberras, the exhibition strengthens academic and institutional cooperation between: the Department of Church History, Patristics and Paleo-Christian Archaeology, and the Department of Art and Art History

This collaboration highlights the value of interdisciplinary research in deepening understanding of the sacred artistic heritage housed within the Jesuit Church and its historical mission.

Launch of Scholarly Publication

The inauguration event also marked the launch of the scholarly volume:

“Shaping Minds and Souls: Jesuit Missions and the Mediterranean World”

Edited by Roberta Cruciata and Nicholas J. Doublet

The publication contributes further to ongoing academic discourse surrounding Jesuit history and influence across the Mediterranean region.

Part of the Jesuit Church Re-Opening Celebrations

This initiative forms part of the official celebrations marking the re-opening of the Jesuit Church, following the completion of the first phase of its conservation project.

The exhibition also reflects sustained interdisciplinary research linked to the Collegium Melitense Research Project, reinforcing the Jesuit Church’s significance as a focal point for scholarship, heritage conservation, and cultural appreciation.
